Miss Z, I think all you need to do is go to System Preferences > International. Then click on the tab 'Input Menu' at the top of the pane. Scroll down until you see an American flag and 'U.S.'; put a check mark into the little box. Also uncheck the box next to French. You should be good to go.
As an alternative, giving you more flexibility, you can put a check into the box at the bottom of the same pane that says, 'Show input menu in menu bar'. Leave the box next to French checked in that list at the top. Now, simply by going to the little flag you'll see in your menu bar, you'll be able to switch from the qwerty to the azerty layout whenever you like.
